Our Mission & Activities
The Bret Harte Community Association, in existence for over 50 years, is a neighborhood organization that supports approximately 500 residences, with the purpose of bringing the community together.
The BHCA is funded by neighborhood and community donations. A $10/year per household donation is suggested, however, all activities are available to all neighborhood residents regardless of donor status. The many accomplishments of BHCA are achieved solely through volunteer efforts.
Communicating with the Neighborhood
BHCA has four methods of communicating events and issues to the neighborhood:
BHCA meetings, scheduled periodically with notification using the methods below.
The Bret Harte Newsletter is published and distributed periodically and contains notification of births, deaths, new residents, local events, crime watch, etc. Event flyers and email notifications are sent periodically regarding upcoming events and time sensitive community news. Newsletters and flyers are distributed through a network of Block Captains.
Bret Harte web site at www.bretharte.org, and through email notifications.
The Bret Harte Community Association sponsors neighborhood social events that bring residents together, as well as supporting the needs of Bret Harte residents. Events are organized and run by neighborhood volunteers and most events are held in the Bret Harte Park.
Annual sponsorship activities are:
Easter Egg Hunt : The Easter Bunny stops by for an Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter. Coffee, juice and bagels are served.
Clay Play In The Park: An art clay class held 2 days during the summer and open to all BH children. The event is run by resident artists Patti McKay & Molly Blauvelt. During 2002, Bret Harte children participated in making ceramic tiles for our Bret Harte Park art wall.
Music in the Park: A potluck and music event with music performed by local neighborhood residents.
Non-Labor Day Picnic: Held in mid-September, this barbecue and potluck marks our annual membership drive.
Pumpkin Patch/Halloween: Children and their parents are invited to the park to pick out a pumpkin, carve it and display their finished Jack-o-lantern. Prizes are drawn for all attending children and treats are served. On Halloween night, the kids are invited back to the Park for pizza and to show off their costume's before heading into the neighborhood for trick-or-treating.
Seniors Assistance Program: Bret Harte Community Association reaches out to neighborhood seniors by providing help with yard work or general handy person help.
Welcome to the Hood: A neighborhood volunteer visits with all new residents to welcome them to the neighborhood and introduce the BHCA.
While the events are great to attend, they cannot run themselves! Please consider getting more involved by helping to organize one of the above events, attending BHCA meetings, and/or taking a position on the BHCA board. Working together as a community, we will continue to make Bret Harte neighborhood a great place to grow up and grow old!
